Penang, often known as "The Pearl of the Orient" lies off the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia.  The state comprises the island of Penang (approx. 285km2) and the mainland known as Province Wellesley or Seberang Perai (760km2) separated by a channel of about 3 km wide. The Penang Bridge and a 24-hour ferry service provide the link between the island and the mainland.  Penang has a population of more than 1 million and it’s capital Georgetown is the 2nd largest city in Malaysia.
